The Formation of Lake Tondano: A Brief History and Myth
According to local legend, Lake Tondano was formed by a massive eruption of Mount Tondano thousands of years ago. The story begins with a man named Maharimbouw and his wife, Marimbaouw, who settled in the area. They lived peacefully until one day a great conflict arose among the villagers. This conflict angered the gods, who decided to punish the inhabitants with a volcanic eruption. The eruption created a large basin that eventually filled with water, forming Lake Tondano. The local people believe that the spirits of Maharimbouw and Marimbaouw still watch over the lake to this day.
Geologically, Lake Tondano was formed by volcanic and tectonic activity in the Minahasa region. Tectonic processes over thousands of years caused the formation of a basin that was then filled with water from various rivers and springs in the area. The lake varies in depth and is surrounded by mountains, enhancing its natural beauty.
